The adjustment from doing photography as a hobby to doing it for a livelihood can have the downfall that the only time you are shooting is for work. Granted, work that you enjoy like a hobby is a good recipe for loving your job. But for me, its easy to gets in slumps where I grind at editing during the week just so I can get ready for the next shoot which I will grind in editing again. Don’t get me wrong; I LOVE working on our wedding and portrait sessions. But just repetitive patterns like that is what burn-out is made of. Thats why I tell myself to ‘get out and shoot’; take photographs of things that aren’t attached to a deadline. This can be as simple as shooting fashion on the street, to pursuing some creative idea you stumbled upon online. Enter light orbs. My brother in-law had the idea of hitting up a local abandoned warehouse (side note: hands down the creepiest place to go to in Chicago at night) and having a try at light orbs. If you’re not familiar, its a variation of light painting. It involves long-exposures, tripods, triggers, LED lights and some semi-thought through shots. We improvised a few things like using bike lights in place of proper LED lights. And some of our shots weren’t super thought through, only because 99% of the time I was creeped out of my living mind. But we got some cool results. Have a look…
